Honey Bees

550 bees have to sit on about 2.5 million flowers to make one pound of honey. Perhaps there is no other creature in the world as busy as the bee. Honey production is a natural system. Honey is not made. It is a wonderful gift given by nature.

The bee is a very hard working insect, even more than humans, which has a huge species. These insects, biologically classified under Pyleum arthropods, are one of the most adorable creatures existing today. These bees are greater than human because of their keen interest in their work. Bees belong to the "Apidae" family which has 20,000 species. Bees are the majority and highly valued in this family that includes other bees such as the carpenter and bumblebee.

In ancient Egypt, virtuous persons were rewarded with honey while a bee sting was punishment for the unworthy. The bee was the symbol of an ancient French emperor. Muhammad, the founder of Islam, said that the bee was the only living creature that God spoke to. By dedicating an entire chapter to this creature, the Qur'an reminds us of the great respect these ancient people had for bees. The amount of energy this insect spends in producing honey is amazing!

Species

Bee is an insect of the 'Arthropoda' association in the animal world. There are five main species of bees found in the world, out of which four species are found in India. Our people have been familiar with these species of bees since ancient times. Its main five species are:

Apis melipona

It is the smallest in size and the least honey collecting bee. Not true in the case of honey, but its contribution in terms of pollination is no less than that of other bees. Its honey taste is somewhat sour. Its honey is the best from Ayurvedic point of view because it collects pollen from even the tiny flowers of the herb, where other bees cannot reach.

Apis dorsata

It is known by different names in different parts of the country. In North India it is called 'Bhanwar' or 'Bhoreh'. It is called 'Sarang' in South India and 'Mom Makhi' in Rajasthan. They make huge hives on the branches of tall trees, tall houses, rocks etc. The hive is about one and a half to two and a half meters wide. Its size is larger than other Indian bees. It also collects more honey than other bees. One hive gives 30 to 50 kg of honey at a time. By nature they are extremely dangerous. When it is teased or hurt by a bird, it chases humans or its pets by running far and wide. Due to being extremely aggressive, it cannot be reared. The honey obtained in the forests is of this bee.

Apis florea

It also makes only one hive in the open like "Bhanwar". But its hive is small and can be seen hanging on the branches. Its hive was not high. The hive is about 20 cm long and about the same width. From this, 250 grams to 500 grams of honey can be obtained at a time.

Apis cerana indica

This species of bee in rural areas is called 'Satkochawa' bee. Because they make about seven parallel hives one after the other in the walls or hollows of trees. They are less aggressive than other bees. One or two kilograms of honey can be obtained from this at a time. It can be reared in boxes. In a year, 10 to 15 kg of honey can be obtained from this.

Apis mellifera

It extends to the whole of Europe, America, Australia and Africa. Its many species, one of which is the Italian bee (Apis mellifera lingustica). It was first brought from Europe in India in 1962 at a place called Nagrota in Himachal Pradesh. After this, its observance started in Ludhiana (Punjab) in 1966-67. Spreading from here, it has now reached all over India.

Bee family

All the bees that live together are called a colony. There are three types of bees in a colony: (1) queen, (2) male and (3) Workers.

Queen

There are thousands of bees in one colony. Of these, the queen is only one. This is actually a fully grown female. The queen bee alone does the work of laying eggs in the entire colony. It is larger in size and brighter than other bees, making it easy to identify in the swarm.

Male bee

The number of male bees fluctuates according to the season and breeding season. During the breeding season, in a colony, they become up to two and a half to three hundred, while in unfavorable conditions their number goes down to zero. Their job is only to inseminate the queen bee. Although many males try to conceive in which only one is successful.

Workers Bee

The most important bees in a colony are the workers. They not only make honey by bringing juice from flowers, but also take care of eggs and babies and build honeycombs.
