Cow is an important pet animal which is found almost everywhere in the world. It gives good quality milk. Hindus call the cow as 'Mata' (Gaumata). Its calves grow up to pull the cart and plow the fields. Cow has been important in India since Vedic times. According to the Bhagavata Purana, five divine Kamadhenu (Nanda, Subhadra, Surabhi, Sushila, Bahula) emerged during the churning of the ocean. Kamdhenu was taken by Brahma. The divine Vedic cow was given to the sage so that its divine nectar Panchagavya could be used for yagyas, spiritual rituals and for the welfare of all humanity.

There are two main characteristics of Indian cow:-

(1) Beautiful hump
(2) Tingling of the skin on their back and down the neck

More than 30 breeds of cow are found in India. Red Sindhi, Sahiwal, Gir, Deoni, Tharparkar etc breeds are the major breeds of milch cows in India.

In public utility, Indian cow can be divided into three classes. In the first category, those cows come which give a lot of milk, but their progeny is indolent and hence useless in agriculture. These types of cows are of milk-oriented monogamous breed. The other cows are those which give less milk but their calves are used for agriculture and cart pulling. These are called Vatspradhan monogamous breeds. Some cows also give plenty of milk and their calves are also hardworking. Such cows are called all-round breeds of cows.
