Some information about Chicken

The chicken or domestic fowl (Gallus gallus domesticus) is a domesticated bird in the pheasant family (Phasianidae). The scientific name of the subspecies was published in 1789 as Phasianus gallus domesticus by Johann Friedrich Gmelin. Chicken is the most common bird species in the world and there are billions of birds worldwide. There are a very large number of varieties. In a narrow sense, the word hen is only used for the females, as a synonym of the hen.

Chicken in nature

One of the chicken's probable ancestors is the Bankiva grouse, or red junglefowl, a wild junglefowl of the Gallus genus found in Southeast Asia. The scientific Latin name for this bird is Gallus gallus. The domestic fowl from the Bankiva fowl is probably domesticated.

The influence of any other gallinaceous birds living in the wild cannot be completely ruled out, but it is now clear that the bank guinea fowl is the most important ancestor. How and when exactly the process took place is also not fully known. Research published in 2014 on mitochondrial DNA from fossil chicken remains suggests the starting point may have been in northern China, some 10,000 years ago. This would make the domestic chicken roughly a contemporary of the other farm animals.

Anatomy and Behavior

A chicken can eat hard food such as corn kernels, although they are less eager to eat it and only eat it during the day when the other food is finished. After swallowing, the food enters the crop, where it can soak. Then there are two stomachs that help to get the food fine. The glandular stomach adds gastric juices for further digestion. The gizzard kneads the feed and grinds it with the help of small stones that the chicken picks up. The feed is then further processed in the small intestine. The residues leave the body through the rectum and the cloaca.

A domestic fowl has two appendixes. These aid in the digestion of raw fiber and extract moisture from the food mass. Chickens tend to peck at red objects, which is remarkable because their comb and wattles themselves are red. In the event of a lack of space, it can also happen that they peck each other to death.

Hierarchy and intelligence

Within a group of chickens there is clearly a hierarchy. This ranking is also known as the pecking order. The place a chicken has in the pecking order determines, among other things, who eats first and who gets the best stick spots. In a large group of chickens, also called bridle, a chicken can recognize more than 100 members of the same species and remember the social status of each of these animals. They also know the position that each chicken takes on 'the ladder'. Chickens have a complicated hierarchy and also interact in a very exact way.

They can understand cause-and-effect relationships. Chickens know object permanence: when they lose sight of an object of interest, they look for it. Chickens are also capable of self-control. This had previously only been demonstrated in humans and other great apes.

These are evidences of good memory and complex structures in social intercourse, comparable to the intelligence of mammals.
