Pigs belong to the family Suidae of the Order Artiodactyla, which includes all the wild and domesticated pigs in the world. The skin of these hoofed creatures is very thick and their bodies which have little hair are very hard. Their muzzle is flattened in the front, inside which there is a circle of soft bone, which keeps the snout hard. With the help of this muzzle, they dig the ground and easily overturn heavy stones.
The tusks of pigs are their weapons of self-defense. They are so strong and sharp that they tear the stomach of even a horse. The uppermost tusks come out and move upwards, but the lower ones remain large and straight. When they close their jaws, they are always edgy and sharp by rubbing each other.
The hooves of pigs are divided into four parts, of which both the front hooves are large and the back is small. Both the rear hooves hang down towards the back of the legs and they do not help them in any way to walk.
The olfactory power of these creatures is very fast, with the help of which they can detect the delicious roots etc. inside the earth. Their main food is meat and dung, but apart from these they also eat insects and small reptiles. Some domesticated pigs also eat feces.
Pigs are native to the temperate and tropical countries of the Eastern and Western Hemisphere, which are divided into two subfamilies, the suinae and the subfamily Peccarinae.
This subfamily includes wild boars from Europe, Asia and Africa, of which the famous European wild boar 'sus scrofa' is particularly notable because most of our domesticated species have descended from it. They were earlier found in large numbers in England but now they can be seen only in the forests of Europe.
Their color is fuzzy-brown or blackish-silty. The head is elongated, the neck is short and the body is stocky. These animals are about 4½ feet long and three feet high, which are famous for their courage and bravery. The sharp tusks of the male are raised above the upper lip, from which they launch a fierce attack in self-defense.
A close relative of these is the second wild boar 'sus cristatus' which is found in the forests of India. It is so brave that sometimes even a lion breaks its stomach in battle. It is also a black-colored creature that is 4½ feet long and 3 feet high.
Sub family Peccarinae:
In this sub-family the wild boars of America, which are called pickeries, have been kept. These are small pigs, which are about one and a half feet high and whose top tusks are bent down instead of rising up like other pigs. There is a scent gland on their back, from which they keep spreading a kind of smell. Among them, Collared Peccary (Pecari Tajacu) is the most famous, which is a blackish-colored creature with white stripes lying on its shoulder.
