The blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) is a marine mammal. Its length has been observed to be up to 30 meters (98 ft). Its weight has been recorded up to 173 tonnes (191 short tons). It is the largest animal of the present existence.
Its body is long and thin. Along with the blue color on its body, the effect of different colors is also visible. It is found in at least three different subspecies. B. m. musculus that grows in the North Atlantic Ocean and the North Pacific, B. m. Intermedia in the South Sea and B. m. brevicauda (also known as the dwarf blue whale) is found in the Indian Ocean and South Pacific Ocean. B. m. indica, which can be found in the Indian Ocean, is another subspecies. Along with this there is another whale which is known as Krill in the form of small crustacean.
At the beginning of the twentieth century blue whales were abundant in almost all of Earth's oceans. Due to their continuous hunting for almost a century, they almost reached the verge of extinction. The international community was established in 1966 to protect them. According to 2002 estimates, there are only 5,000 to 12,000 whales left in the world, which are divided into five groups. The IUCN estimates that today their number is probably between 10,000 and 25,000. Before their hunting, the largest population was in the Antarctic, which was around 2,39,000. In addition, very small numbers (about 2,000) were in the eastern North Pacific, the Antarctic, and the Indian Ocean. Two groups were in the North Atlantic, and at least two in the southern hemisphere. In 2014, the California blue whale population recorded a boom and nearly reached its pre-hunt population.
The blue whale is a member of the Balaenopteridae family. This family includes the humpback whales, fin whales, briade whales, sei whales, and minke whales. The blue whale is generally considered to be one of the eight genera of Balaenoptera. It is considered a species of Sibaldus rather than a genus of Balaenoptera, but it is nowhere accepted.
Description and behavior
The blue whale has a long tapering body that is much wider than other whales. The head is U-shaped and extends from a prominent ridge to the apex with a hole. Their dorsal fins are small. It has an average height of 28 cm (0.92 ft) in), and typically ranges between 20 cm (8 in) and 40 cm (16 in). It is visible only when it is diving. Its lung capacity is 5,000 liters (1,300 US gallons).
