Dolphins
Dolphins are aquatic mammals and are closely related to timbres and porcupines. They have 17 genera and 40 species. They can range in size from 1.2 m (4 ft) and 400 kg (Maui Swan) to 9.5 m (30 ft) by 10 tons (orca or killer whale). They are found throughout the world, especially in the shallow oceanic regions of continental waters. They are carnivorous and feed on small fish and squid. The Delphinidae are the largest and relatively non-nun family of the cetaceans.
Dolphin appeared on Earth about 10 million years ago during the Miocene period. Dolphin are one of the most intelligent creatures on earth and their often friendly behavior and habit of always being happy have made them very popular among humans. Dolphin found in the Ganges river has been declared by the Government of India as the national aquatic animal of India.
The name is originally from the Greek δελφίς (delphi), "dolphin", which was related to the Greek theλ (delphus), "womb". Therefore the name of the animal can be interpreted as "a fish with a womb". The name was transmitted via Latin delphinus (later romanization of Greek - delphino), which became dolphinus in medieval Latin, and into Old French dolphin, which reintroduced ph in the word. The term meerswine (that is, "sea pig") has also been used historically.
The term 'dolphin' may also be used under the genus Odontoceti, all species in the family Delphinidae (sea dolphins) and the river dolphin families Inidae (South American river dolphins), Pontoporidae (La Plata dolphins, Lipidae, Yangtze river dolphins) and Platnistidae (Ganga river dolphin and Indus river dolphin).
The term has often been misused in the Americas, mainly in the fishing industry, where all small cetaceans (dolphins and porpoises) are considered porpoises, while the fish dorado is called a dolphin fish. In common usage the term 'whale' is used only for large cetacean species, while smaller ones with beaks or long noses are considered 'dolphins'. The name 'dolphin' is used as a synonym for bottlenose dolphin.
under the family Delphinidae and qualify as dolphins. Although the terms 'dolphin' and 'porpoise' are sometimes used interchangeably, porpoises are not considered dolphins and have distinct physical features such as a short beak and spade-shaped teeth; They also differ in their behavior. Porpoises belong to the family Phocoenidae and share a common ancestry with Delphinidae.
