After the female lays the egg (usually just one), the male typically incubates it for up to 80 days. Chicks hatch fully feathered and are precocial, meaning they can fend for themselves soon after birth.

All species of kiwi are considered at risk or threatened, mainly due to habitat loss and predation by introduced mammals such as stoats, dogs, and cats.
